Backlight Bleed Test

This test helps you find backlight bleed on LCD screens. For best results, conduct this test in a dark room with your monitor's brightness set to high.

How to Check for Backlight Bleed

Backlight bleed happens when light from the monitor's backlight escapes around the edges of the screen, causing uneven brightness on a black background. Our backlight bleed test simplifies spotting this issue. This test is only applicable to LCD-type displays (including LED, QLED), not OLEDs which have self-lit pixels.

  • Click the button above to enter a full-screen black view for the test.
  • Look for non-uniform areas, especially around the edges and corners of the screen.
  • Common issues: You might see "flashlighting" (bright spots in the corners) or "clouding" (patchy, uneven bright spots across the screen). A perfect screen should be uniformly black during this backlight bleed test.

Backlight Bleed FAQ

Is a small amount of backlight bleed normal?
Yes, a minor, uniform amount of backlight bleed is very common and generally considered normal for most edge-lit LCD monitors. Due to manufacturing tolerances, it's difficult to create a perfect seal. However, if the bleed is distracting during normal use (e.g., watching movies), it might be considered excessive.
What is the difference between backlight bleed and IPS glow?
This is a key distinction. Backlight bleed is static; it stays in the same spot regardless of your viewing angle. It's caused by light leaking from the edges. IPS glow is a phenomenon specific to IPS panels where you see a "glow" (often with a color tint) that appears or shifts as you change your viewing angle. If the bright patch moves or disappears as you move your head, it's likely IPS glow, not backlight bleed.
Can you fix backlight bleed?
Unfortunately, backlight bleed is a hardware issue and generally cannot be "fixed" through software. Some users have reported minor success by loosening the monitor's frame screws slightly or gently massaging the area, but these methods carry risk and are not guaranteed. The most effective solution for severe cases is to contact the manufacturer for a warranty replacement.
